Hahko Meets Merk
On the podcast this week is Merk!
I first became aware of Merk as a member of the Tom Lark band, and then became a fan after watching him perform solo on 95bFM, but it was the release of his latest record, ‘Infinite Youth’ when I truly fell in love.
His songs are intimate and powerful pop doodles, effortlessly cool and infinitely endearing. I was amazed and obsessed with ‘Laps Around The Sun’ earlier this year, as ‘GOD’ grew and grew on me before finalisjng itself as the personal favorite after a great live performance recently on RNZ. I just love how close everything sounds, and how disarming the music is without being at all childish or simple.
So it was very exciting to have Merk on the couch, and while we spend time talking about the making of the record in all its facets, we also cover a lot of ground like the challenge of translating a record like his into a live setting, his recent trip over to Australia and the importance of his community to himself, and to NZ music in general.
Thank you to Poynton Studios for hosting us, Benji for producing and Merk for his time,
