Hahko Meets Jack Berry
On the podcast this week is Damin McCabe of Jack Berry / Garbage Records
Hahko and Damin have a great chemistry as they recount stories of Dunedin. You can hear how both of their musical experiences have been interwoven over the years, even if this was the first time they have sat down and talked about it.
Damin shares his sentiment for stumbling across new opportunities, and although he does an amazing amount of work as a musician, producer and running his label Garbage, he talks about how everything was almost a happy accident. It sounds simple – if he wants to do it, he’ll do it. If a new opportunity doesn’t mesh well, he just says no.
Damin’s energy shows how willing he is to leave the process up to time and coincidence. Even with so much work released, I believe him when he responds to Hahko’s question on how he handles the grind with, “I don’t know… am I grinding though?”
Hahko shares below:
“I’m a big fan of Damin’s and it was extremely fun to sit down with him and realize all the reasons why, from our shared love of indie guitar music to our shared values of community and everything in between.
Garbage Records, his collective that plays with design, video, photography, promotions, recordings, distribution and artists is an organic and exciting thing I’ve watched grow from afar. I will always have a special place in my heart for Dunedin, and the work of Garbage is just another in a long line of creative excellence born out of cold and boredom.
Where McCabe and his collaborators excel is their interest in, and understanding of, other creative fields and their interactions with one another and music specifically. They operate in many ways I think are some of the smartest ways to be doing it in 2021, all the while being stereotypically nonchalant.
After many close calls, it was a real pleasure to finally get Damin on the couch. We discuss everything from Garbage & Jack Berry, to the Dunedin scene of Two Cartoons, Males & ReFuel bar, his relationship with his collaborators, how he developed his design style and why guitar bands need to work with producers more.
Thanks again to Poynton Studios for hosting us, Benji for producing, Silas for the BTS content, and Damin for his time.”
