Hahko Meets Nicole Gaffney (Carb on Carb)
Nicole Gaffney is a true DIY hero.
With her band ‘Carb on Carb’ and now continuing through Girls Rock Camp Aotearoa, i’ve always seen Nicole as a person of action, someone who not only creates but also builds their own path.
Whether its hand printing their own merch or self-booking huge tours through the U.S & Australia and crashing on couches through the world, Carb on Carb have been one of the most productive and independent bands of recent times. I’ve been wearing their ‘for ages’ tee for ages.
Girls Rock Camp Aotearoa is just a continuation of Nicole’s involvement with the idea of community, having come through the Auckland scene, seeing the DIY house party circuit of the US & promoting the importance of AA shows.
So often, I talk about what might be wrong with how the music industry functions. I feel very grateful to speak to someone I think not only represents some of the solutions for us moving forward, but is just out there already making it happen.
We had a lovely chat, covering the origin of Girls Rock Camp Aotearoa, discuss mentorship and community scenes, her experience as a touring female musician, and what we can do to make gigs a safe space for everyone.
